How we build every tool

Published score, our own plain wording, code checked against the source, limits stated, dated review.

Last reviewed: By the uncovermyrisk.com editorial team Educational only, not medical advice.

Our rules

  1. A published score. Each tool uses a method from a peer-reviewed paper or a national health body, named on the page.
  2. Tested against the source. Our calculations are checked by automated tests against the worked examples in the paper or a reference implementation, before launch and on every change.
  3. Limits stated plainly. Who the score was validated for, what it cannot tell you, and when to talk to a doctor.
  4. Our own words. We write questions and explanations ourselves and do not copy questionnaires whose wording is owned by someone else.
  5. Private by design. All calculations run in your browser. See Privacy.

ToolMethodHow we test it
Heart risk (PREVENT)AHA PREVENT base model, total CVD, 10 and 30 year (Khan 2024). Coefficients copied from the preventr R package 0.12.1 (MIT licence), which implements the published supplement tables (preventr).Matches preventr's own test cases to 3 decimals: a 50-year-old woman (14.7% at 10 years, 53.0% at 30 years) and man (16.3%, 51.4%) with total cholesterol 200, HDL 45, systolic 160 on treatment, diabetes, non-smoker, eGFR 90.
eGFR helperCKD-EPI 2021, race-free (Inker 2021)Matches preventr's test cases: creatinine 1.5 mg/dL, woman, 43 gives 44; 88 µmol/L, man, 43 gives 96.
Diabetes riskBang 2009 points and cut point of 5 (Bang 2009), plus the ADA risk test's gestational diabetes point (ADA). Questions in our own words.Every age and BMI band edge, and full example cases scored by hand from the published table.
Sleep apnea (STOP-Bang)Chung 2008 and 2016 (Chung 2008) (Chung 2016). The interactive version is off until we hold a licence from University Health Network (stopbang.ca).Score bands 0 to 2, 3 to 4, 5 to 8 and the 2016 rule for the middle band.
FIB-4Sterling 2006 formula (Sterling 2006); cutoffs 1.30 and 2.67 (Shah 2009); 2.0 low cutoff at 65+ (McPherson 2017).Hand-checked arithmetic examples and every cutoff edge.
StrokeCDC risk factor list (CDC) (a checklist, not a score); CHA2DS2-VASc (Lip 2010) with 2023 guideline zones (ACC/AHA 2023).Point values, age bands and the maximum of 9.

All uncovermyrisk.com tools are plain JavaScript. The test suite runs with Node's built-in test runner. Papers that publish a formula without numeric patient examples are tested with hand-worked arithmetic, and we say so in the test file.

Review dates

Every page shows when it was last reviewed. We re-check sources when a guideline or score is updated, for example a new USPSTF recommendation or a correction to a paper, and change the date when we do.
