Health screening tests by age: what adults need and when

Screening tests look for a disease before it causes symptoms. The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) decides which ones are worth it, for whom and from what age. Here they are in one place, each with a check that applies the rule to you.

Last reviewed: By the uncovermyrisk.com editorial team Educational only, not medical advice.

This page lists screenings for adults without symptoms. If you have symptoms, a family history that changes the plan, or a known condition, the tests you need are a diagnosis question for your doctor, not screening. Educational only, not medical advice.

By age

18 to 39

Blood pressure every 3 to 5 years if normal and not at higher risk (USPSTF 2021). A one-time hepatitis C test (USPSTF 2020) and at least one HIV test (USPSTF 2019). Women: cervical screening from 21 (USPSTF 2018). Hepatitis B if a risk factor applies (USPSTF 2020). From 35, a diabetes test if you have overweight or obesity (USPSTF 2021).

40 to 49

Blood pressure every year (USPSTF 2021). Women: mammograms every other year from 40 (USPSTF 2024). Colorectal screening from 45 (USPSTF 2021). The earlier tests continue.

50 to 64

Lung cancer screening from 50 if your smoking history qualifies (USPSTF 2021). Men: from 55, talk about a PSA test (USPSTF 2018). Postmenopausal women at higher risk: a bone density scan (USPSTF 2025).

65 and older

Women: a bone density scan (USPSTF 2025). Women can stop cervical screening after 65 if earlier screening was adequate and they are not at higher risk (USPSTF 2018). Men 65 to 75 who ever smoked: one aneurysm ultrasound (USPSTF 2019). Colorectal screening through 75, then a choice to 85 (USPSTF 2021). Mammograms through 74 (USPSTF 2024). No routine PSA test from 70 (USPSTF 2018).

Other guidelines

Other groups sometimes recommend more. The CDC advises every adult to be tested for hepatitis B at least once (CDC 2023) and for hepatitis C at least once with no upper age limit (CDC 2020), and the American Diabetes Association advises testing everyone from 35 (ADA Standards 2026). The American Cancer Society has its own schedules for breast (ACS), cervical (ACS 2025), colorectal (ACS), lung (ACS 2023) and prostate cancer (ACS). Each check on this site shows where these differ from the USPSTF.

Also see which numbers you need for each tool and the heart risk calculator. To build a list for your own age and sex, our sister site knowtoprevail.com puts the USPSTF grade A and B screenings in one plan.
